One of the last decisions I had to make before finally finishing our new patio was what to do with the exposed foundation of our house – should we paint it? Shall we paint it? I had no idea how to paint a house foundation, but I thought it was worth finding out!

I found that a simple primer in its unpainted state really cut down on all the hard work we put into the patio. I didn’t want to try to hide the foundation with plants or ignore it. Most house foundations are made of concrete, and if you try to paint it with a brush, it will soak in quickly (and take forever). The sprayer makes the base color work much faster.

The Pros And Cons Of Concrete Flooring
Once you figure out which atomizer settings work best, you’ll be surprised at how little you spray. I did exactly what the Wagner Spraytech manual said and had no problems! I used a broad spray pattern for most of the project to paint the base, then brought it in as I painted closer to the ground.
Should you cover the floor with plastic when painting the foundation of your home? Well, I was surprised! Originally, I was going to pull my plastic wrap while painting. But when I saw how clean the spray paint was (the sprayer was very precise), I realized I didn’t actually need to cover the floor. I was happy to have one less thing!
I simply pulled the stones out of the base so that the paint wouldn’t get too dirty. I then spread the color evenly and the color stayed exactly where I wanted (on top of the base). After I finished applying the primer, I put the stones back in place!
Of course, if you’re working on a painting project in an area where you don’t need to overspray at all, I recommend wiping it off with painter’s tape. For example, painting an interior space or right next to a wall covering or a window requires bonding. You can see in the photo above that I completely covered my basement window even though it was an exterior concrete project.
How To Waterproof Your New Foundation Walls
When painting outdoors, remember that breezes can be a problem. So even if there is no overspray, a breeze can create it. Make sure the windows are completely covered and taped at the edges!
Since this was an exterior painting project, I knew I had to use a paint that would really last. My base was completely smooth and blemish free, so I didn’t have to use a wire brush before painting the concrete. However, if you have an old foundation or loose masonry, you may need to clean it up before painting.
I first decided to use a primer to paint the base. I wanted a smooth surface that would last. Since I was painting exterior concrete, I knew I needed an exterior house paint to make it last. To start, I first applied two coats of Sherwin-Williams Loxon Masonry & Concrete Primerin White (no paint) to the base. You can find the paint online or at most at Lowe’s. I have used masonry primer on exterior concrete before and this product is really great. The primer seals the concrete and allows the top coat of paint to fully adhere.
After applying the primer, I followed it up with Sherwin-WilliamsSuperPaint Exterior Acrylic Latexin Extra White (also unpainted). For this project, just a coat was enough. I had excellent foundation coverage and didn’t run into any of the common problems with painting exterior walls.
Choosing Exterior Paint Colors: Why Your Home’s Exposure Matters
I had to clean up the Flexio spray paint while painting over layers of masonry primer and acrylic latex SuperPaint. The process of cleaning and changing the color was very difficult. All I had to do was remove the nozzle from the front of the sprayer and rinse it with warm water. After cleaning the sprayer at the end of the project, I let it air dry and it was perfect for the next use!
As you can see from the picture above, the foundation was great! I think it really brightens up the look of my house and makes it a lot nicer. Painted concrete looks really finished and polished.
Since I was already outside with the spray paint and painting the foundation, I looked at the wall next to my house. The dirty black paint was an eyesore, so I decided to paint it with a light gray exterior paint as well.
Changing the background from black to a lighter color made the surroundings very bright. What a game changer! I opted for beige (or grey) to complement the rest of the exterior. The whole project took no time at all and was well worth the effort.

I used two coats of Sherwin-Williams Oil Enamel in Colonnade Gray to paint the wall. The photo above is after the first application. After letting the paint dry I thought it needed more coverage.
So, if you are going to paint the foundation of your home, I highly recommend using a spray gun and go for it! You may find a few other areas of your home’s exterior that could also use some touch ups. I love this project because it gave a lot of visual payoff for little effort.
