There is a big difference between the order of the English Old Testament Bible and the Hebrew Bible. The English OT order is given below, but there is also a chronological table which is much more extensive and explanatory. The two charts below follow the threefold classification of the Hebrew scriptures in use today.

Books Of Old Testament In Chronological Order

Originally there was a twofold classification. The twofold classification was simply the Law and the Prophets (Mt 5:17; Mk 11:13; Lk 24:27).

Chronology Of Old Testament Prophets

Although the content is the same, the Hebrew Scriptures were organized differently. Both classifications were used in the New Testament when dealing with the Old Testament Scriptures. (Click for a larger graphic).

Jesus said, “…which are written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms.” Luke 24:44

For purposes of comparison, the order of the Old Testament Bible books in the English Bible is given below. The Septuagint (LXX), a 3rd-century B.C. Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible. B.C., was the first to provide the four-class organization used in the English Bible today.1

We must remember that this or the above arrangement is not a divinely ordered series of books, with the possible exception of the Pentateuch, which has always been the basis of the books of the Bible.

(1) From God to Us by Geisler and Nix is an excellent reference work for better understanding the origin of the Bible. You are here: Home / Bible Reading Schedule in Chronological Order, Download and Print

Here is a chronological Bible reading plan printed on one page, front and back. Once the front and back are printed out on one page, you can fold them and insert them into your Bible. Full-page versions are also included in the download. CLICK on the image to download the timetables. You are free to copy and redistribute them.

One of the most important things you can do to grow in your Christian life is to read your Bible in chronological order.

Chronology Of The Old Testament Prophets

There are schedules that are numbered and undated, those with dates that you can use every year, and those that are dated. The numbered ones are useful if you start on a date other than the first of the year. The dated ones are good for starting at the beginning of the year. I personally download one of these and then like to mark Sundays. This is not necessary for you, but it helps me to keep track.

In addition to full-page schedules, I’ve created condensed schedules that are contained on two pages instead of four. If you have a printer that prints on both sides of the paper, you can fit the entire schedule onto one piece of paper. This works well if you want to create one-page reading plans for yourself or for your church. You can make any copies and pass them on.

Below is a podcast and links to a video explaining why I put the books in the order I gave them. Please take a few minutes to watch the video if you haven’t already. I think it’s important that you understand why the readings are arranged that way. Below is a copy of the text for both.

Chronological Bible Reading Plan

Why I Made a New Schedule for Reading or Listening to the Bible in Chronological Order Yvon Prehn, www.

I’ve come up with a new schedule for this and I can’t wait to share it with you!

If you have decided that you want to read or listen to the Bible in chronological, historical order, you must decide:

• There are MANY of them and they are all very good. So why should I create a new one?

Week 2: Overview Of The Old Testament Part 2pawson Books

• And because of that experience, I wanted to adjust the schedules I had tried—some larger, some smaller. I have a new one for you – you can get it at www. download.

• Wanted to keep it at ONE YEAR. I looked at one, two, 1.5 – all options for timing, but a year seemed best to me. I’ve been doing this for over 20 years.

• I had some historical/current dating issues with current plans – from my study I felt some were just plain wrong. From an academic point of view, as a historian, I was disturbed by other issues.

• Also, I didn’t care how some plans divided the books (the Gospels were a prime example). I found it too distracting and felt the whole book lost integrity.

• Again, after much study and prayer, I’m following what I did and why – some reasons are scientific, some are practical, but if you’re interested, find it here…

• One way to do this is to take psalms and proverbs out of the reading in chronological order—and insert them alternately as a psalm and a chapter of proverbs in addition to your reading for the day.

• #2 – Also, some portions of the Old Testament are difficult to read on their own, and I concluded that a psalm or proverb a day would be helpful nourishment for the soul, even if reading a book like Leviticus is somewhat would be more difficult.

• Note that reading these books in this way does not compromise the integrity of the book, since both Psalms and Proverbs are not serial books written by one author.

The Most Important Thing You Can Do This Year—read Through The Bible In Chronological Order—and I’d Like To Help You Do It

• The whole book is often viewed as one extended prayer lesson, involving speaking to God on different occasions, expressing different feelings – fear, joy, anger, regret, hope, praise.

• The goal of this reading is to build a continuous practice of prayer in your life, no matter the occasion.
