This article analyzes the concept of skills and identifies the skills that entrepreneurs need to manage their teams. To achieve these goals, the first step was to find out the management skills developed in university entrepreneurship and innovation courses and compare them with the necessary skills perceived by entrepreneurs. This research is framed within the management sciences and the research problem is anchored to the following research questions: What leadership skills do students need to be effective in entrepreneurial endeavors after graduation? Are the skills identified by entrepreneurs sufficiently studied in Portuguese universities? Does the work experience, gender or age of the student contribute to the level of leadership skills? Two focus groups with 15 entrepreneurs and a conceptual content analysis were conducted on the management skills identified by entrepreneurs, which determined the presence and frequency of concepts represented by words or sentences in the entrepreneur’s discourse. To check whether these skills are developed in higher education entrepreneurship and innovation, an online survey was conducted with 3-year students from several universities in the academic year 2016/2017. The primary result of the study is a proposal for a model for developing leadership skills of students to strengthen their leadership skills as entrepreneurs.
