How To Not Go To School 2021 – Currently, the Averill Park Central School District is committed to having all K-12 students return to our buildings for full-time, in-person learning for the 2021-22 school year. NYSED issued back-to-school health and safety guidance on Thursday, August 12 to help school districts plan. This guidance is consistent with current CDC guidance. On Tuesday, Aug. 24, Gov. Hochul said he would implement several COVID-19 directives affecting school districts across the state, including wearing masks.

Averill Park CSD has developed a school opening plan based on NYSED back-to-school health and safety guidance, CDC guidance, Gov. Hochul’s forward-looking directives, and in coordination with Questar III BOCES and other area school districts. Any additional state or county guidance the district receives in the future will be incorporated into our district plans.
The district’s initial reopening plan below outlines specific health and safety guidelines such as physical distancing in classrooms, face coverings for all students and staff regardless of immunization status, and continued cleaning and disinfection.

Back To School: Preparing To Return To In Person Learning
A COVID-19 vaccine is a major preventive public health strategy to end the pandemic. All eligible individuals are encouraged to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Currently, there are three vaccines available (Pfizer – 12+, Moderna – 18+, and Johnson & Johnson – 18+). If you have any questions about the COVID-19 vaccine please contact your GP.
The CDC recommends that schools “consider a number of factors when preparing for the 2021-22 school year, including the level of COVID-19 transmission throughout the community and in the school community, as well as vaccination coverage in both the community as a whole and its school community. Schools should Consult with local health officials and monitor community transmission, vaccination coverage, diagnostic testing, and outbreaks to guide decision-making at the level of a stratified prevention strategy. This is especially important given that currently students under the age of 12 cannot be vaccinated.

Who Has The Power To Reopen California Classrooms?
Many of the health and safety guidelines the district established last year will continue to keep students, staff and families safe. This year, the District will employ a tiered mitigation approach that includes, but is not limited to:
The CDC and NYSED recommend that all students, staff, and visitors in schools and on school buses wear a face covering over their mouth and nose, regardless of immunization status.
According to the CDC, “unvaccinated individuals remain the greatest concern. While breakthrough infections occur more frequently in vaccinated individuals than in unvaccinated individuals, individuals infected with variant Delta, including those fully vaccinated and People who show symptoms of a breakthrough infection, can spread it to others.”

Students and staff are required to wear masks when indoors. Masks are optional when off campus. Students who sit in class and maintain physical distance will be given mask breaks. Mask breaks will also be provided when students are outside.

All indoor spaces used for music instruction shall provide 3 feet of space between students. If the room used for rehearsals or classes allows for additional space, use more than 3 feet of additional space.
All band, orchestra and choir students will be required to wear masks, with the exception of band students who play wind instruments. Students who play wind instruments (woodwinds, brass, etc.) will use bell covers on their instruments to reduce the circulation of aerosols in the room space. Students can also use the slit mask when playing wind instruments.
All rehearsals and performances will last a maximum of 50 minutes, followed by a 20-minute break. Outdoor spaces will continue to be used for rehearsals, classes and performances where possible.
What’s Going On With California’s Mask Rules For Schools?
When indoors, students must stay 3 feet apart and wear face coverings whenever possible during physical education instruction. Physical education teachers will prioritize outdoor activities, weather permitting.
Intercollegiate sports will be offered to students this fall. We encourage parents of all students, including those enrolled in interscholastic athletics, to consider vaccinations after consulting with their child’s primary care provider.
The district will evaluate all student-athletes participating in high-risk sports in the fall. Participation in high-risk sports requires parent/guardian consent for student-athlete testing.
All student-athletes and coaches will be required to wear masks when indoors. This includes locker rooms, gymnasiums, lobbies, athletic training rooms, weight rooms, exercise rooms, and school buses.
London District Catholic School Board
Under current guidelines, fully immunized student-athletes who are asymptomatic can avoid isolation after a known exposure, meaning they will be allowed to continue to participate in individual studies, athletics and extracurricular activities. Student-athletes who are not fully vaccinated may need to quarantine after known exposure, meaning individual learning, athletic and extracurricular participation will be delayed.
The District also intends to develop other extracurricular activities throughout the school year. These events will follow all physical distancing and mask requirements.
As stated in CDC guidance, the COVID-19 screening test identifies people who have COVID-19, including those with or without symptoms, who may be contagious. In K-12 schools, COVID-19 screening tests can quickly identify and isolate cases, help isolate people who may have been exposed to COVID-19 but are not fully vaccinated, and identify clusters where the virus is present.
The District is working with the Rensselaer County DOH and Questar III BOCES to implement a robust screening program that will regularly test a percentage of students.
Back To School: Managing Parent Anxiety
CDC no longer recommends temperature checks or school screening questionnaires. Families should be concerned about their child showing symptoms of COVID-19 and seek testing if they do.
As a result of this change in guidance, the district will no longer be taking temperatures of students and staff upon entry and will no longer conduct morning checks.
CDC recommends that covering coughs and sneezes can help prevent educators, staff, and students from getting and spreading COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.
