This is a great way to make an inexpensive but high-quality business card that will attract a lot of attention. By using white cardstock on one side and printed on the other, your cards will stand out. Best of all, it allows you to customize your business card however you want. No more templates and shiny cheap business cards! Hooray!
Best Business Card Printing Services Compared In 2023
A stack of cardstock I found at a craft store – it’s white on one side and printed on the other. It’s pretty cheap – usually around $10. This gives you about 200 business cards for a very small amount. 😀
Keep in mind that typical business cards are 3.5 inches wide and 2 inches tall. We can easily fit three on a small stack of cardboard with little waste.
To get started, open Pages and a new blank page. Go to File > Page Setup, then select Paper Size. Here, select Manage custom sizes.
Be sure to go into the settings and turn on the vertical ruler so you can line everything up properly. Command + click on a blank page and go to the vertical ruler. Click the left ruler and drag the mouse to the left and you will see a blue guide line. To get a guide line from the top ruler, click and drag the mouse down.

Insert two vertical guides, one at 0.75 inches and the other at 4.25 inches. Then place three horizontal guide lines: one at 0.5 inches, one at 2.5 inches, and one at 4.5 inches.
Create a text box that almost fills the middle blue box. Make sure there is about a 1/4 inch margin between the edge of the text box and the blue guides. This will keep everything neat and tidy.
Now add your text and format it as you like. You can also add a small image at this point if you want. it all depends on you.
Once the middle box is ready, you can copy and paste the text into the other two. I’ve included a screenshot to show you what it should look like.

Place the cardboard card blank side down in the printer. When the cards start printing, be sure to separate them by pulling them to the side. Otherwise, the ink will smear.
Start by cutting out both sides – use one of the guide lines above to start, then make sure the card is 3 1/2 inches wide and cut off the excess.

To print your own business cards, check your printer’s manual for maximum card weights. Most business cards are printed on 80-110 pound cover card stock. Business Card Printing
If you are printing a stack of cards, lay out the film so that the business cards fill the entire sheet. Since you will be printing on paper and cutting the cards later, you can save a lot of time by printing 12 cards at once on one sheet of paper. For this work, use a sieve with a high mesh. Printing on paper requires water-based inks, which are thinner than plastisol. Josh chooses a 200 mesh sieve.
Speaking of paper, you’ll want to use heavy paper that’s over 80. That way the paper will hold up to the print and won’t curl as the ink dries. Josh uses 100-weight black paper.
Pro tip: Black paper is one of the hardest colors to print on. The black surface makes the ink colors duller because it absorbs more light than other paper colors. If you have never printed on paper before, start with white paper. Once you enable this process, move on to the black paper.
When printing on paper, there are a few tools you’ll need to get the best results. A vacuum roller is one tool that really comes in handy. The vacuum roller holds the paper in place (think of it like an air hockey table) while you print. It also minimizes the need for any adhesives. Vacuum glue.

Why don’t you use a regular roller? Well, you’ll have to apply a layer of water-based pallet glue with a regular roller. All is well until it’s time to remove the paper from the plate. If you are not careful with this, if you have enough glue on the plate, you can distort the image and the paper.
Whether you use a vacuum roller or a regular glue roller, make a clip on your plate after registering the task. You can use anything from paint sticks to scraps of aluminum. As long as the paper stays in place while printing, you’re good to go.
You’ll want to use a water-based acrylic (HSA) ink, such as Green Galaxy ink, for business card printing. Plastisol inks adhere to whatever substrate it is printed on, while water-based inks bond to the substrate. You don’t want to hand out scratched and worn business cards. Josh chooses Comet White and Galactic Gold to print his business cards. You can also add a low hardness ink additive to the ink, such as Warp Drive. You will find out why later.
High strength durometer is best for printing on paper. Use the highest hardness squeegee available at your store. In the video, Josh uses a 70 hardness squeegee.
How To Print Your Own Business Cards
When printing on paper, you need as few printing passes as possible. Get too close and you can ruin the design by blurring the fine details you’re looking for.
After printing, allow the cards to air dry. Thanks to the deformation drive, the ink will chemically harden within 48 hours. Keep this in mind if you decide to use heat to harden the paper
