Investment Banking Vs. Corporate Finance: What’s The Difference?

For early-career professionals looking to break into investment banking, there are few better ways than an internship at a leading firm on Wall Street or City.

Despite the often long hours, the opportunity to gain first-hand experience from senior bankers, and hopefully a full-time job offer at a major global bank, means the application process is extremely competitive.

While many banks have stopped accepting applications for this summer, some deadlines remain open. Here is a list of some in the US, Canada, Europe, Middle East and Africa that are still accepting applications.

Investment banking is a very competitive and popular field. Investment bankers are expected to help clients raise capital to finance their activities and expand their businesses as well as act as financial advisors to companies.

During the investment banking recruitment process, banks screen and interview candidates to extend ofrs for internships or full-time positions. Ideally, applications and informational interviews should begin 3-6 months before the start of recruitment.

Internships: Many of the top banks, including Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, and the RBS Group, offer summer internships in investment banking. On-the-job experience and practical skills training can provide would-be bankers with the perct foundation for an investment banking career. The best performing students can get full-time jobs after graduation.

Full time: It used to be easier to get a last minute job in investment banking if you had good grades and went to an Ivy League university. It was only when full recruitment began that many students became interested in finance and competed for on-campus interviews. Over the past ten years, that path has become less viable. Summer internal recruitment at investment banks has become much more competitive, with recruitment starting earlier and full-time non-internal recruitment approaching “endangered species” status. If you don’t get a summer internship, it will take longer to get into the industry.

Investment Banking Recruitment: The Ultimate Guide

Off-cycle Recruitment: If you’ve graduated from university, graduate or business school and find yourself behind the curve, it’s a good idea to target small and mid-market investment banks, which you can still consider for a lateral role.
