So, what exactly is poop? Although everyone is unique in the size, shape and smell of their stool, there are a few things that indicate healthy (or unhealthy) stool.

Healthy poop can be as varied and unique as the people who make it. But there are a few general rules you should follow if you want to check your poo art for optimal health.

The poop emoji has one thing right: the color brown. Intestinal bile contains bilirubin, a pigment produced by the breakdown of red blood cells in the body, which gets the credit for this beautiful shade of brown.

A somewhat log-like shape is how most stools should pass due to their shape in the intestines. However, as we will get to later, there are different types of shapes that poop can have.

If you’ve had licorice, iron supplements, or bismuth medications (such as Pepto-Bismol), it may be an explanation for black stool.

You’re probably not surprised to hear that red poop can mean bleeding, whether it’s from hemorrhoids or lower gastrointestinal bleeding. If your stool is slightly red, however, you may not need to get upset right away.

There are other, less serious reasons for this color change. Foods like beets, cranberries, red gelatin, or tomato juice can also turn poop red.

Thick, foul-smelling, yellow stools are a sign of excess fat. This may be a direct link to malabsorption disorders such as celiac disease, where your body does not absorb enough nutrients.

There are green stools here or hard stools that happen to us. It is when this type of irregularity continues for more than a day or two that you should take action and talk to a doctor. The same goes for changes in color or consistency, or staining.

Chronic constipation can disrupt the bowels, while chronic diarrhea can make it difficult for a person to absorb the necessary nutrients from food. Both chronic constipation and chronic diarrhea can be a sign of more serious conditions.

Again, the first sign of one of these should not be an immediate cause for concern, but keep an eye out and see if it lasts more than a few days.

That said, pay attention to any signs of bleeding. If you have not eaten any of the foods mentioned above that can change your tissue this color, talk to a health care professional as soon as possible.
