The Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a new symbol to identify the faith. Prophet and President of the Church Russell M. Nelson announced it and explained its significance during the Saturday evening session of the April 2020 General Conference.

President Nelson said the new symbol is a continuation of the effort he felt he began in August 2018 to focus on the church’s divinely revealed name. Since then, he said, church leaders, departments, related agencies, the main website, members and many others now use the correct name of the church.

“We have gone to these extraordinary lengths because when we remove the name of the Lord from the name of His church, we unwittingly remove Him as the central focus of our worship and our lives,” said President Nelson, who insisted strongly on what was right. The name of the church of his ministry since at least 1990. “When we take upon us the name of the Savior in baptism, we commit ourselves to testify that Jesus is the Christ in our words, thoughts, and actions.”
This new logo emphasizes the name of Jesus Christ and his central role in everything the church does. The name of the church is contained within a rectangular shape representing a cornerstone. This idea has biblical roots. The apostle Paul, using a construction metaphor in his first-century letter to the Ephesian saints, wrote that the church is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets—Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone. The center of the symbol is a representation of Christus, Thorvaldsen’s marble statue. Jesus stands under an arch commemorating his coming out of the tomb three days after his death.
“[The symbol] represents the resurrected, living Lord reaching out to embrace all who come to Him,” President Nelson said. “Since we have long identified the Reformed Gospel with the living, resurrected Christ, this symbol should be familiar to many.”
This new symbol will be used on Church materials as directed by the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Detailed usage guidelines are being prepared, including possible uses of the new symbol around the world.

“This symbol will now be used as a visual identifier for the Church’s official literature, news and events,” the prophet added. “It will remind everyone that this is the Church of the Savior and that everything we do as members of His Church is centered on Jesus Christ and His gospel.”
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a global family of over 16 million members worldwide. The new symbol is being created in 110 languages—a complex process that will take months to complete. As the First Presidency requested in 2019, as the church made adjustments to better reflect the correct use of the full name of the faith, church members around the world should be patient and courteous as they make these symbolic adjustments in their language.
