Today’s design discussion slide challenge is about what happens outside of my couch: curtains. The white IKEA curtains that felt so crisp in my last home are suddenly as dull as an all-purpose flour sack in the new place. They spruced up my old second floor picture window and added just the right amount of softness to my drywall and Dove White walls (the best warm white in my opinion). But these walls are not the famous milk color, but instead the common owner’s favorite Swiss coffee. Suddenly these curtains look tired. Maybe they also changed the baby’s pacifier at 3 in the morning. They are such hard-working curtains. And if that’s a great hypothesis, the second one…this room needs something else.
If you’ve ever scrolled through my stash of bedroom photos on Instagram, you’d be safe to assume that I live for pattern and color. Except for the first floor view of my house, the FIRST FLOOR, and my blue sofa, there is NO TOL. How did I get here?
In my search for a panacea, or at least a design palette cleanser, I discovered a little trend I’d like to share that might just save my living room in its current state: decorative curtains. I hope you don’t need to explain the absolute death of neutral window coverings in the design world over the last ten years (or…ever?). Heck, most of the projects revealed here play it safe with white or linen fabric panels and novel shades throughout.
Of course, there are several reasons for this: they add just enough texture (read: privacy) in a functional way, without clashing with the design of the room or adding too much visual weight; They are easy to find at several price points; they are classic; and as mentioned, they are usually a very safe choice for something very expensive. Who wants to spend hundreds or even thousands on flower patterns before you’re tired of the money? I don’t even dignify this question with an answer (no, okay, that’s the answer).

But back to the “trend”. Interior design in general has spread its wings into the mainstream in recent years. Moving on to our inner friends is this vignette by Martha Mulholland. This whole house is really a testament to the beautiful and thick drapery. I think if he had gone with beige or white paneling in this room, it would have stolen the warmth from the window sills and woodwork. The beautiful Zak + Fox fabric on the panel lives up to the neutral, warm neutral space as bedding, wallpaper and even furniture. So it’s a pattern, but it’s more of a visual texture than a fully visible graphic.
